I'm thrilled to have new nonfiction up this morning at the Tin House Open Bar. This was my sixth submission and first acceptance to the Open Bar, which, among other great things, features flash fiction and nonfiction (pieces up of 1000 words). I was encouraged to continue submitting by several very encouraging rejection letters - love those!

My flash nonfiction The Blue Light Special was written during one of Kathy Fish's amazing online flash workshops (a story a day for a week!), so many thanks to her for the inspiration and guidance and to all the many wonderful and helpful comments from the other participants. I can't say enough good things about her workshops, tops for inspiration and camaraderie.

In addition to flash fiction and nonfiction, the Tin House Open Bar accepts submissions for the blog in a number of cool categories. Check out their guidelines.

We’d pawed over half-priced holiday merchandise and dined on the blue light special from the smeary glass case: two soggy sandwiches on white rolls, with fluorescent meat, American cheese and wilting lettuce. When they had announced the “special” on the loudspeaker—two sandwiches for a dollar—my ex said, “Sounds like lunch.” I wondered how long the sandwiches had been sizzling under the lights.

Read the rest of The Blue Light Special and other great content at the Tin House Open Bar.

Thanks!
